Vegas Baby Vegas!

I was selected in a contest held by our local paper, Vallejo Times Herald's Code 707. It's like Vallejo's own SF Bay Guardian or Easy Bay Express, except smaller. I'd like to freelance for them sometime so I'm gonna give it a shot. I'll have the article and picture along with my giant check posted when it comes out in the next week or two.

Rob and I accompanied our friend Rich on a car ride back to his new home in Vegas. It was a fun trip. What is normally a 9-10 hour trip, we accomplished in less than that. I was told when Rich drove up he was topping out at 140 mph. Whoa! I drive an SUV and going 70 mph is fast for me. On our way back he averaged between 110-120 mph. Damn, speedracer he is. His new car is really cool. It's an A6 wagon... and it's damn sexy! Cruisin at 120 mph in his car was really smooth. Didn't even feel that fast... Here's a pic of his car:

We made a detour at the Mojave Desert and went to some airplane repair/airport testing grounds. It was really neat. Rich took some pics of his car in a abandoned airplane hangar.

When we got to Vegas we immediately hit the casinos. Afterall, we only had a day and a half to do stuff, so we tried to cram everything in a day in a halfs time.

Highlights of the trip:

I won a combined $200 on mostly slots and a couple hands of black jack. I lost about $80. Wheel of fortune is my lucky slot. So is the Star Wars one. So I still came out on the plus side. Not bad for a day and half.

I got to ride Rich's mini bike!

Rich's house is awesome... he has a projector hooked up to his dvd player/computer so its HUGE!!!!!

I also purchased a Rickenbacker 620 6 string Fireglo at Ed Roman's Guitar Store.... actually Rob got it for me so he can get airmiles and I'm gonna pay him back... (eventually)

Ain't it a beaut?!

Afterwards, we went to Calloways to look a golf stuff for Rob. Rob got a new driver... it's huge. so huge i don't even know if its even legal!!!! i hope he kicks ass in golf with it.

Afterwards, we went to the airport to go back home. Bossman Buko picked us up and I went straight to bed.

Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November

I saw this movie over the weekend. I would say that its not totally faithful to Alan Moore's original comic book. But I must remind myself and others that this is just another adaptation on a different medium. However, it's theme as a political allegory remains intact. It is definitely exciting, and the story thought provoking. I don't want to ruin the movie, but It definitely deserves a look. Definitely the best movie I've seen this year so far. Natalie Portman definitely makes up for past roles on the Star Wars films. Hugo Weaving makes an excellent V, and with his voice mumbling behind the mask, you can't help but think he's going to say "Mr. Anderson...." in a particulate voice. It's remarkable that he's been in some of the most influential movies within the last 5 or so years. Matrix, LOTR (series) and now V. Way to go Hugo!!! On a scale of 2 thumbs I'll give it 1.5 thumbs up. (+ a toe)

"People shouldn't fear their governments... Governments should fear the people..."
-V

Now that's what I call people power!

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at Japantown Denny's

I saw them... Really. Walk right out of Japantown Denny's. It was a really surreal moment.

Happenings of the week...

Monday was a kick ass episode of 24. I still can't believe they killed off Edgar! Even though I thought he was retarded he's still the guy you love to hate. And I thought him and Chloe were gonna hook up! It was pretty dramatic how they killed off the LOTR dude... You would think he deserved it, but no one really deserves that. Yikes!!!!

Tuesday went to the practice space. Everyone was there! Eskapo practiced for their upcoming show. It was just like old times... except Bruce wasn't there. It was a little dramatic, but it was very inspiring. It was a happy time, but at the same time sad. At least for me it was. Dino felt melancholy. I was somewhat nostalgic, but I guess I'm just a sentimental pansy. Max used Bruce's kit, which he left for the group. They put up photographs of Bruce on the drum head. Rupert, which I've seen only a handful of times since Eskapo broke up printed some pictures for everyone and Angelica made some photo fliers of the pic above.

For me it was amazing how Rupert turned around. Out of everyone I felt he was the most adamant in moving on. Coming from him, I thought it was really over. But after all these events, drama put aside, the group managed to get back together. I wasn't sure if this was going to be a one time thing, but apparently its not. I just wish the guys got back together under different circumstances. Weddings, funerals, birthday get-togethers; these times shouldn't be the only time friends (or family) get together. The practice went very well. It was just like a mini show in the space. It was crowded... you just felt the electricity in the air... That this was a special time. Since Eskapo's initial break-up, this event spawned 3 great bands: the remainder of Eskapo formed Delubyo, Luke's already existing band The Wounds (formerly Exit Wounds), Rupert in Echo of Bullets along with Josh C. (Our Turn) and Naomi(Botskurd). Even though myself and a lot of people were sad about it, and some even in denial (especially me), I all turned out for the better. In the end it was all about growth and now everything is good again.

*Ron and Trish's baby girl was born! Congrats to for the newest member of the Skyflakes...

Wednesday was sushi day with Kristi. I was so stuffed I had food coma... She has something planned for my birthday next week. We're celebrating this weekend since my birthday is on a weekday and she'll be gone to visit her parents next weekend. Can't wait to see what plans are in store. What I do know is that we're going to see V for Vendetta on friday and then going on a trip to Napa Saturday.

Thursday was hang out at home with the parentals day. I played some CoH, watched some episodes of Arrested Development on DVD. Bang on the drums. Played some guitar. Played some piano. My mom forced me to get a haircut because she said I looked like a crazy bum. I don't know why I force myself to grow my hair out. As much of a hassle it is, I think its just that I want to grow my hair out while I still can. Also, I just want to be different from all the filipino guys out there. All of them are bald or got tight fades... I just want to be different. Anyways, no Rogaine or hair plugs for me! I just had my dad trim the hair in the back and sides but left the top. So in the last year, I can remember only having 3 haircuts. You do the math... That's a lot of hair. After taking a shower I was knocked the f*ck out. Sleepy time.

Today I'm writing this blog. Work is cake. I did most of my work earlier in the week so I'm just typing this to pass some time. For the 4th Friday in a row, I've managed to not eat meat! I'm on my way to being a better non-practicing catholic!!! woo!!!! Tommorows my baseball fantasy draft, then I'm off to Napa. Then to the city to see Dogs of Ire, Flattbush, ExCxB, Delubyo and Vallejo Hardcore's finest... ESKAPO.

Show last Saturday

Went solo to Balazo to see the Dead Pets(UK), Los Dryheavers(Watsonville, CA) and La Plebe(SF).

After getting home from Kristi's Saturday night I contemplated going to Balazo. Kept on backing out because 1: The Weather sucked. IT was raining. and 2. I don't like flying solo.

Ever since Rich moved to Vegas I've gone to lesser shows. Sometimes I'll go to a show with Chris, Jesse or Rich V, but I just can't find the motivation to go by myself. It was already 10:30, but I figured I'd make it to watch La Plebe because they would always come out to the Eskapo shows back in the days, I thought it would be cool and adventurous if I went by myself. I missed out on the 'heavers but managed to make it halfway through the Dead Pets. They were awesome... UK Ska-punk.... the real thing... accents and all. They were excellent. I saw them last time the played with La Plebe at Studio Z back when Augie was still with the band. Man have things changed. Ran into little Javier, and bought him a beer. I rarely drink anymore so I ended up buying myself a mojito and a tecate. We talked for a bit and caught up. It was good talking with him. I walked around and recognized some of the regulars. I realized I haven't been out to a show like this for a while. It was refreshing... La Plebe went up next and I stood in front of Lupe, the bass player. He acknowledged me and I rose my drink in his honor. It was cool seeing those guys. Last time I saw La Plebe play, Eskapo was still together. They zipped through their set. I have to admit I'm not as familiar with the new songs, but they did play some of their classics, as well as a new song! It was a typical show though. The crowd was hyped, moshing and crowd surfing. I spent most of my time watching the mics in case they fell. It was the roadie-instinct in me I guess... They even dedicated a song our friend Bruce and some folks in the crowd yelled back in acknowledgement. That was really touching. Javier and I toasted from across the stage. After the show, I talked to the guys and congratulated them on a great show. I talked to Alberto and Tony about possibly doing a show in August for Bruce. They said they were down... but it's all I need to motivate myself to get a good show together.... So I'll say it right now... Minority Threat II will be in August. All in all, it was a good night... As for now, I'm anticipating the return of Eskapo next week...

Reflections about the weekend

I usually look forward to the weekends with hope that I would get to sleep in, spend time with my girlfriend and get some well needed rest. But last weekend I didn't get any of that. But I dug deep and found enough in me to last the rest of the weekend on little sleep. Friday I spent most of the night looking over old video footage I've recorded of old Eskapo shows mainly from Gilman, Balazo and the Legendary Bindlestiff Studio. I was at Max and Angelica's place along with Loi, Arnol, Luke, Anna Sophie and Rupert looking through countless photos of Bruce and the rest of the guys mostly taken by Lian and Angelica. I was sifting through DV tapes looking for footage of Bruce to capture stills to make for a slideshow that Angelica was putting together in memory of Bruce. It was surreal, because it felt like Bruce wasn't gone, but he was. I didn't sleep till 3am. We all stayed up late.

I woke up early and picked up Kuya Phil, Kit and Rich and we made it early to the church where the funeral services were held. All of our photo collages were up, Angelica had the slide show set up and it played throughout the whole procession. It was interesting seeing pictures of Bruce in all aspects of his life. His life in the scene, his life as a airsoft/sniper player, and lastly his life at home. Smiling, having fun, spending time with his family. That's a side, I never saw. As for his family, they knew of his life outside, but they've never seen it. Vice versa for the airsoft folks.

All of VxHxC was there, including all the guys from Eskapo/Delubyo/Wounds/Echo of Bullets, Static Thought, Have-nots, La Plebe, Sputterdoll, Secret Janet/Down the Ship. Folks from the hardcore scene, Markus and Yapple. Jesse, Dawn and Alex also came. Even Javier was there. They had a big picture of Bruce (see previous post), his jacket and his guitar at the front near the altar. The minister spoke of Bruce beautifully and in lights I've never seen him. The whole time I was balling like a baby. I tried to hold it in at first but I couldn't help it. At one point of the procession, in tribute to Bruce, Manila Sunrise was played along with the photos in the slideshow. Rupert was nervous. I told him to relax. That this is your tribute, Eskapo's tribute and our tribute to him. His family would want to hear and see what he made. It was beautiful. Picture of Bruce from various shows, laughing and talking with friends, playing pusoy dos and quarters with the guys, airsoft pics. A couple of the pics I took made the cut. I was most proud of the one I took with Bruce jumping in the air with his guitar with lights flashing... The whole time I was crying every time the picture with Loi and Bruce came up with the phallic balloon it made me laugh. Then during the eulogy people from all walks of life spoke about him. Some stories were funny... Some were sad. Two struck me very hard... An old classmate of Bruce who he has recently re-connected with spoke about their friendship, them getting out of touch and when they met again after nearly 6 years, she was pregnant. When the baby was born, Bruce wanted her to describe her giving birth because he knew he would never experience that. She flew out the day after Bruce died, not knowing he already passed. But it was too late. Still she came and described it. That made me tremendously sad. In Bruce's short life, he's touched so many peoples lives and it was evident at the ceremony. There wasn't enough room in the Church! He's managed to accomplish so much in such a short time. He was brave, never gave up, and never complained about anything.

The other story was one of his family members talking about him. And then he spoke to us, saying we should never wait to get together for funerals. To take time to spend time with your family and friends. To those who are closest to you. Because our lives our short and precious. It's cliche but very true. I tend to forget, neglect others and go for long lengths without talking to old friends. Ironically, the whole weekend was about re-establishing relationships. At the reception, we all hung out. I haven't seen Rio and Bern of Sputterdoll for a while and I promised that I'd go to a show and help out. We all talked and caught up while remembering Bruce. Rich, my friend who moved to Vegas was also in for the funeral spoke to me and it was like old times. He would always go to shows with me and later thanked me for opening all this up to him, cause he wouldn't be into this if weren't for me. I told him that everything here, the people, the friendships, the music were all good things and that I couldn't keep a good thing to myself.

Afterwards the party continued to Max and Angelicas.... where lots of smoking, drinking and pusoy dos playing was done in Bruce's honor. They had a little shrine set up with his guitar and pics set up. I jammed with Phil, Jesse and Alex and later with Shiloh. It was good times. There's talk of doing a show in his honor... In Vallejo. Loi and I decided to start planning for it and also start our record label... Machete Thrash/Balisong Records.

Then I had to drop everyone off and head home cause I had to go pseudo-bachelor party for my friend Mike with the old high school crew. I haven't seen seen most of them except for Rich V. and Chris since the last wedding. It was good seeing everyone again and I thought about what Bruce's family member said, don't wait to spend time with you're friends and family. From then on, I'm gonna manage my time better to spend time with everyone. I got home Sunday morning and slept in. In the afternoon, I went out with Chris to look for a present for his mom. We stopped by Rasputins and I picked up the Death Angel box set and a 7 Seconds CD. We had lunch at Tortilla Grill and had Mexican food while talking about life, comics and our own comic. That we should get crankin' cause we're not gonna make the deadline for APECON. Chris agreed. After further discussion, he dropped me off and I spent some time with my parents. Talked about the weekend, watch a bit of the Oscars. Then Rob and Jos picked me up to have dinner and drop off Rich at the airport. Again it was like old times. I've known Rob the longest and we've been best friends since we were 5. Lately, I feel like I haven't been a good friend and I feel like an ass about it. I want to be around people that mean the most to me and I feel I've strayed off. So I decided to join up fantasy baseball with him, and asked him to help me put my next computer and work on the BMW with me. We're planning to drive with Rich back to Vegas after he comes back late March. Good times, with good friends and family. After a long weekend I finally slept... Laying in bed I thought about everything I've done this weekend and came to this conclusion. Treasure your life. Live the way you want to live it, but do it smartly. Treasure your family. Treasure your friends, especially those closest to you. Don't take these treasures for granted, because they are the most meaningful whether your life is long or short.

R.I.P. Bruce

R.I.P. Bruce Webb 1980-2006

Bruce, even though I haven't known you long I just want to say that you have had a major positive impact in my life.  I'm sad that you're not here, but I'm glad that you are no longer in pain and that you are finally with your parents...

I remember when we first met at PP7.  I've never heard of Eskapo, and I saw you and the rest of the guys standing on the side.  I have to admit you guys looked scary and intimidating. I was caught in the pit and when I fell you picked me up.  I'll never forget that.  When I found out you guys were from the V, and we all started hanging out and going to the shows; underneath all that tough exterior, and your zero tolerance on bullshit, I found you to be coolest, nicest guy.  Talking videogames, sci fi shit and tattoos, schooling me on the hardcore scene and hooking me up with all the cool buttons...  I'll always treasure those times.  You're one of the bravest souls and I knew that you'd fight till the very end.  You said you would return to your glory days someday...  but you know what?  You never left.  You'll continue to live in my heart, my thoughts and through your music.  Rest easy man.  I'll see you when I get there...

Love,

Norm
